The Breaking Point

Description

He was here. He was really, actually here.
Bird stood in front of S'chn's door, a warm bowl of homemade soup in his hands. He stared at the door he'd visited so many times, a door that once brought joy. But now, standing before that very same door, Bird felt ambivalent. He tapped his claws anxiously. "Just breathe..." He whispered to himself. Bird carefully removed one hand from the bowl and knocked.
Bird held the bowl close to his chest, staring directly ahead of him, brows creasing with a mixture of worry and anxiety. Bird hadn't seen his old friend S'chn in quite some time. 'But he's still my friend...' Bird thought to himself. Doubt rose in his mind and Bird began to try and analyze his memories of S'chn. Had they ever been friends?
Before he could continue his train of thought, the door opened.

--

S'chn was staring out the back window of his door, watching Romaine and Nebby run around under the trees. He felt the smallest smile come to his face as he watched them, silently wishing he could build the courage to join them. But no, he hovered by the door, silent with the tip of his nose pressed to the thin glass. A knock at his door made him turn rather quickly, and his heart leaped shortly.

Perhaps Quartz had come by to visit again- how ironic that their last conversation about children had been S'chn saying how he would never had one, and then not too long later there was one running about his house! Hopefully he would find humor in it, rather than sadness, what with his own reluctant ties to his daughter. Doing to the door, S'chn took a breath before opening it a bit, peeking out and blinking at the sunlight to see... bird?

S'chn blinked, staring rather stiffly at Bird for a few moments before he cleared his throat and opened the door a little wider, silently inviting him in.

Why was he here? The two of them hadn't spoken in quite some time, and Bird hadn't really come around to visit since... well, since their leaf collecting adventure.

--

Bird forced a smile. For a few moments he said nothing, taking in the sight of S'chn. He had certainly changed since they had last seen each other. Realizing he hadn't said a single word, Bird's face flushed with embarassment. "Hello S'chn..! I made too much vegetable soup and thought I'd bring some over." He said, nodding to the bowl in his hands. Unsure if S'chn was inviting him in or not, Bird remained outside. "I uh.. It's nice to see you, we haven't seen each other in a while. How have you been?" He asked, hoping he sounded genuine.

--

The air hovered uncomfortable and heavy for a few moments before Bird spoke, and S'chn realized that he had yet to say anything. "uh. Yes, come in, please." he said softly, ushering Bird in before securing the door behind him.

"I have been... busy. Certainly." He said, sliding over to the window to make sure that Nebby was still in the yard. She seemed to be stooped over one of the plants, and both she and Romaine were studying it closely. "Many things have happened in the past few months. How.. have you been?" he felt a prickle of guilt for not visiting Bird, but.. well, he could hardly leave his house and go into the yard, much less actually visit bird's own home where anything could happen...

--

Bird walked into the house and took a quick glance around. Not much had changed, though the plants had grown a bit. Bird set the bowl of soup on the nearest table and turned to one of the plants nearby. He gently ran his fingers along one of the leaves, tracing it's edge. He smiled and held his hand under one leaf, examining it. "I've been good." He lied, his smile fading. He turned to face S'chn. "Your plants seem to be-" He froze when he noticed the wyngling outside. A thought entered Bird's mind and his maternal instincts kicked in. Bird's expression grew hard, his brow creased. "Who's that?" He asked, hoping desprately that his assumption was wrong. S'chn was not ready to care for a wyngling.

--

S'chn moved to stand near one of his bookcases, looking as Bird surveyed his home. He glanced outside again, seeing the sky darken ever so slightly- looks like it would rain a bit later. It wasn't too much of a problem so long as he caught Nebby with a towel when she decided to come in so that she didnt run mud all through the house. He looked up when bird stopped in the middle of a sentence, his brow raising slightly.

"That is Nebby. She is.. living with me, currently." he said, feeling his heart beat start to pick up at the look on Bird's face.

--

Bird couldn't believe it. How could S'chn be so irresponsible! "Living with you? S'chn, staying locked inside a house all day isn't living." He said harshly, anger boiling inside his chest. "I thought you were more rational than this!" Bird gestured to the wyngling outside. "A wyngling needs exercise, friends, social interactions! Not THIS!" He held his arms out as if to indicate the entire house. "And don't you dare accuse me of being incompetent. I adopted a wyngling months ago and she is being cared for extremely well." He growled, pointing threateningly at S'chn. Bird closed his eyes and shook his head in disbelief. "I just can't believe you'd do this! I thought I knew who you were but clearly I was wrong."

--

S'chn blinked, caught rather off guard by the sudden hostility radiating from Bird. He found himself leaning back slightly, away from the torrent of anger that was rolling through the air line vicious storm clouds. "I..." he opened his mouth to speak, but was silenced when Bird cut him off. He'd not remembered Bird being so.... intimidating.

"I assure you, it was not my intention to keep her locked away. I am dealing with it." he said, feeling slightly defensive. It wasn't like he'd gone out and looked for a wyngling to adopt! He stood up a little straighter, feeling his spine stiffen. "Besides, she has told me that she wishes to stay." he added.

--

"Dealing with it!?" Bird said, voice cracking. A lump began to form in his throat and he knew he was going to cry. He always had when he grew furious. Bird balled his hands into fists and fought the urge to cry. "S'chn, this is not dealing with it!" Tears stung his eyes. "Dealing with it is taking them to Alma! Simple as that!" He yelled, fury burning behind his warery eyes. When S'chn spoke again Bird totally lost it. "SOMETIMES THAT DOESN'T MATTER!" He took a few steps toward him. "S'CHN THIS IS NOT OKAY! THAT WYNGLING NEEDS SOMEONE RESPONSIBLE AND MENTALLY STABLE TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. AND CLEARLY YOU ARE NEITHER OF THOSE THINGS! IF YOU REALLY CARE ABOUT WHAT WHAT'S GOOD FOR THAT LITTLE WYNGLING YOU WOULD TAKE THEM TO ALMA." He yelled furiously, tears streaming down his cheeks.

--

S'chn stared as Bird advanced, his voice raising in volume, filling the room with the angry sound. Nebby was now staring into the house form the window, curiosity on her face though she made no move. S'chn's entire attention was focused on the shouting wyngro, his shoulders stiffening as he rallied himself to respond.

"You.. Bird, you may not ignore me for months and then come to my house and tell me that h- that what I am doing with my own life is wrong. You may have your opinion, but if you are simply going to shout at me then you are not welcome here." S'chn's voice was unsteady as he spoke, but still held an edge to it.

"Please leave." Swallowing, S'chn pointed to the door and held himself as still as he could, indignation, fear and a distinct feeling of betrayal rolling through him like a storm.

--

Bird glared at S'chn, vision blurred by his tears. Without saying a word, he walked to the door. He grabbed the handle then paused. "You broke us apart, S'chn... You broke the space walkers apart." He said shakily. Not another word left his lips as he turned the handle and exited the house, greeted by the suffocating humidity of the coming storm.

--

S'chn stood still for a long time after the door slammed shut, leaving him in the silence of the house. He took a few breaths, his chin lowering as he tried to keep a hold of himself. His eyes drifted to the soup sitting on the table as the back door opened hesitantly.

"Mr. S?" Nebby asked, looking from the front door to him. "What was that? I heard a buncha shouting." she came in just as the rain began to fall, Romaine following closely.

"Nothing, Nebby. Just... an unhappy guest. I do not believe he will be returning any time soon." he said, swallowing and letting out a soft breath.
