In Case I Forgot to Say it

Dilbert had gathered her things-mostly painting supplies from her room- when her father stopped her with a clearing of his throat. It was clear that things were changing. Everything in the house was packed up in boxes to be dealt out between the parents, Dilbert's own things in a sack that she carried over her shoulder. She took the little model airplane that used to belong to DJ, just to remember her sister by. Maybe she would hang it on her ceiling. 

Dilbert had graduated the other day, and the past few days had come and gone like a blur. Things going into boxes and friends coming by to congratulate everyone. The whole while she had watched as her father seemed to become incredibly tired. Even as she turned to look at him, he seemed to droop around his frame as if he were much older than he was. 

"Dilbert." her father said, padding over to her. "I want you to know how proud of you I am. How proud your mom is of you, even if she doesn't say it. Promise to visit me sometimes." he said, his voice low. Dilbert found tears in her eyes. Her father was certainly not a sentimental tom. Indeed, he was usually incredibly hard to read, but she understood. A smile coming to her cheeks, she signed an eager 'every day, dad.' and hugged him. She then turned and, with a little wave, exited the door to go and take on her new position in the villager ranks.
