Song of Storms

"Come in, Silas! There's a big storm on the way, you dont want to get caught in it!" 

Silas looked up from the strange flower he'd been investigating to the door of the nook where his mother stood, gesturing for him to come inside. Looking up, he heard the distant rumble of thunder from inside darkened clouds as they crawled lazily across the sky. Normally, rainstorms were fun to play in, but when thunder and lighting got involved he knew it was probably best to play inside. Hopping across the threshold, Silas was greeted by a wall of sound. Because of the coming storm many of the louder, more rambunctious wynglings that Alma usually made play outside were crowded into the nook, screaming and running around in the tight space. While Silas supposed it would be better for them to be safe inside the nook, the sudden sound hurt his ears. He climbed the nearest flight of stairs to get some respite from the cacophony. 

When he got to the top of the stairs, a thought crossed his mind- he had a friend in the nook who didn't mind being quiet! Maybe he could spend some time with her! Silas wandered the halls, trying to remember which room Haruhi was in. After asking around, he finally found it, cheerily announcing himself to the closed door before letting himself in. 

Silas didn't see Haruhi right away. She was curled up in the corner, a blanket wrapped tightly around most of her with just the tip of her snout peeking out. Her glasses were missing from her face as well, though he spied them on her bed after a few moments. 

"Haruhi?" He asked hesitantly, wondering if she was feeling sick, or maybe if she'd had a frightening dream. He felt his chest purr out slightly as a protective urge came over him. He walked over and settled into her side. She opened her eyes a bit, staring at him for a few moments before she seemed to realize who he was. He must have been a blurry blob to her at the moment! 

"Silas, oh, uhm, hi." she said after a few moments. He offered her a small smile, tilting his head to the side slightly. 

"What's wrong? Why are you all curled into the corner like this?" He asked her. She looked down, staring at the carpet. He felt her shrug a bit, seeming somewhat unwilling to talk about it. After a few moments, the pitter of rain could be heard on the windowpane and she let out a soft sigh. 

"I'm af-" Hauhi cut off when a flash lit up the window. Her whole body tensed as, immediately after a boom shook the air. Silas could feel her shiver against him and he bit his bottom lip, realizing what it was she was afraid of. 

"That's okay." he said, patting the top of the blanket where he assumed Haruhi's back was. "Don't worry, though! I won't let that big ole storm get to you! You're safe right here." he said, trying to cheer her up a bit. She seemed to relax for a moment, offering a small smile even though she didn't open her eyes.

"Thanks." she squeaked out, burying her nose in the blanket and taking a few deep breaths. Silas tapped his chin, frowning as he tried to think of some way that he could help. Oh! Of course! He'd brought his erhu with him this morning when he and his mom had arrived, just in case he got some time to practice. This seemed like a good time to whip it out! 

"Do you think a song would help? I brought my erhu, I can play something for you!" he offered. Haruhi seemed to ponder for a moment before she nodded.

"D-don't take too long to get it!" She squeaked after him as he rushed to fetch the instrument. Navigating through the crowd of wynglings downstairs was a challenge, but finally he found the closet where his erhu had been stashed away for safekeeping, grabbing the case, he pushed his way through the crowd. Every lightning flash and thunder rumble made him move just a little faster, the thought of Haruhi shivering alone in the corner of her room making him feel a little sick to his stomach. When he got back to the room, he settled next to her again, pushing his side into her's. She let out an audible sigh when he settled in, her shaking calmed slightly. 

"W... what are you going to play?" she asked him, her voice shaking but forcibly steadied. He patted her back again and gave her as brilliant a smile as he could muster. 

"Anything and everything." he responded. He would play until there was no more storm to be scared of. Haruhi let out a soft laugh, cracking an eye open to look at him with a grateful smile. 

"That sounds good to me." she said quietly. Silas nodded and set the base of the erhu on his leg, gently drawing the bow across the string. He closed his eyes, letting the vibrations roll through the air as he spun a song he'd learned just the other day. Time seemed to melt around them, the storm crashing outside and mixing with the sound that bled from his instrument. The sounds were gentle but strong, strong enough so that the storm's cascading sounds melted into the background, accompaniment to his playing. Haruhi relaxed as he played, tensing every once and a while when a flash of lightning lit the room up but otherwise staying very still. 

Finally, the thunder and lightning subsided, replaced by a gentle misting rain that fogged up the corners of the window. Silas kept playing until he felt the song was finished, the sound reverberating through the air for a few moments before silence swallowed it. They stayed still and quiet for a long time before Haruhi stirred, her head lifting from the ground to look up at Silas. 

"Thank you." she said sincerely. Silas smiled warmly. "Do you wanna... play something?" she asked then, seeming to come into herself more by the moment now that the fear had subsided. Silas laughed, nodding brightly. The two of them then went and, after putting the erhu back safely in it's case, splashed in puddles under the weak sunlight until Silas was called to go home with his mother.
